Tooth And Claw

With 5.1 guardian druids now have the Tooth and Claw ability.

Tooth and Claw
Requires Druid (Guardian)
Requires level 32
Requires Bear Form
Your autoattacks in Bear Form have a 40% chance to empower your next Maul for 10 sec.  Empowered Maul causes its victim's next autoattack within 15 sec to deal (max((AP * $AGI) * 250 / 100, $STA * 250 / 100) * 0.4) less damage.

So here are the assumptions:

  1. The cooldown of Maul is less than the melee attack speed of the boss.
  2. Tooth and Claw does NOT proc from melee misses, dodges or parries.
  3. In this math I use 40% melee damage which was about the total melee damage I take over the course of a raid night. You can save this spreadsheet and adjust the green fields as you wish to get a more accurate number for you.
The results:

Tooth and Claw will increase the stat weights of Haste and Hit/Expertise due to faster attacks to proc more and increasing the amount you do proc from melee attacks connecting.

Hit/Expertise 0.0052



Tips And Tricks
  1. Track your Tooth and Claw Buff on you and the Debuff on your target. Do NOT spend rage on maul unless these two conditions are true, the rage is otherwise wasted on just damage.


More Math:

- Boss DPS: 80000 
- Average Vengeance: ~71000 AP
- Average Tooth and Claw Melee Reduction: ~178000
- Boss DPS redution: ~ 5000 DPS
- % Boss DPS reduction: 6.5%

This just shows how much damage is being mitigated with Tooth and Claw on a single hit and the average percentage DPS being mitigated. Please view the TnC tab on the spreadsheet for more extensive math if you wish. Feedback always needed.

Dodge Stat Weight With Savage Defence

Recently I had someone ask about the value of dodge and how it scales with the 45% with Savage Defense up on bosses that are a majority dodge damage. This is a very good questions so I've done the math.

"Hey there Troy (aka Tova), I was thinking abit on the value of dodge on a fight like Mel'jarak for example, where alot of the damage is dodgeable. Since SD is added last to your dodge % wouldn't this mean that dodge gets its value atleast doubled when SD is up?

Lets say I have 15% dodge, add the 45% from SD and we reach 60% dodge. On a fight like Mel'jarak that is almost the same as a 60% dmg reduction. This results in my damage taken is 40% while SD is up. Increasing dodge by 1% will then bring down the damage taken to 39% which is a 2,5% dmg reduction from 40%.

What's your thought about this?"

So here it is with Savage Defense Up!

With my current gear:

1% Less Damage Taken: +0.6% dodge needed
  (Math found on the reduction tab)
Which is only: 533 rating

Without SD: 751

This means I need 1.4 less rating to get 1% less damage taken.

New Dodge Stat Weight With SD: 0.0471

Higher than any other stat!

Couple quick points:
  • This is based on stat weights calculated on my spreadsheet and stat should be considered to your "enough".
  • Reforging is in the spreadsheet under notes on the right.
  • This is without valour upgrades and non elite mode. The elite mode versions are direct upgrades.

Glyph or Unglyphed FR, That Is The Question

This is something that I should have done with the first round of math but someone recently pointed out to me and even did the basics for me. Credit to Thefool808 on http://elitistjerks.com

Basically how this plays out is, how much of my healing do I need to do with unglyphed frenzied regen so that I know ovreall I'm getting more healing that if the healers where getting 40% extra healing on me.

total healing = t, FR healing percent = p

t*p = (t - t*p)* .4
p = .4 - .4p
1.4p = .4
p = .4/1.4
p = 28.57%


This works out to 28.57%. So if I do 28.57% of my own healing, or more, unglyphed is more total healing on me. If I am doing less than I would get more healing from healers getting 40% more.

I've extended it a bit further on my spreadsheet to account for uptime on glyphed FR base on your rage per second you generate.




As you can see because currently  I only have 9.33 RPS I can only keep it up 93.33% of the time. so this lowers the benefit a bit on glyphed where I only need to be doing 26.67% of my total heals.


Keep in mind, this is just the math! You should also consider things like you being an extra "healer" and the benefit of that. Things like fight or 10 vs 25. Play smart, play bear.

Just a note: I've also worked this in to Clique. 

1. Open the Clique options from your spell book.
2. At the bottom click Bind other and select "Run custom macro"
3. Click "Set binding" and hit the key you want to bind it to.
4. In the text box put:

/cast nature's swiftness
/cast [@mouseover] Healing Touch;
/run SetCVar("autoUnshift",1)

This just runs the same macro you would use for yourself but casts it at your mouseover target.

Bear Weapon Enchants

Just a quick post on weapon enchants now that we have access to Living Steel. Windsong is still our better enchant.


Dancing Steel - Permanently enchants a melee weapon to sometimes increase your Strength or Agility by 1,650 when dealing melee damage.  Your highest stat is always chosen. (12 second buff)


Windsong - Permanently enchants a melee weapon to sometimes increase your critical strike, haste, or mastery by 1500 for 12 sec when dealing damage or healing with spells and melee attacks.  Requires a level 372 or higher item.








At first glace, to the average druid who HASN'T been reading along, (jk) Dancing Steel looks to be the better choice.

Uptime 40%
Ave Stat Weight 0.0243    (Crit+Haste+Mastery)/3
Enchant Weight 14.56


Dancing Steel (1PPM)
        Agi         1650             %Uptime        >14.56

This works out that Dancing Steel needs to have a 30.23% up time.

Time to start watching logs, I will update you guys as I see more actual uptimes from mine and other bear logs.

Heroic Stone Guard

I've been trying to keep on various forums to see how the bear community is doing and there has been tons of questions and discussions on heroic Stone Guard. Just thought I'd blog our kill video and just give a few tips that really helped us.

- Four healing ten man made this incredibly easy to manage the damage. With the tile buffs there is just so much throughput due to so much mana and damage has no problem beating the enrage with one less dps

- This is a clear case where FR shines (SD vr FR Post)
